The photo of Packard Hall at Spelman college, was taken in 1895. Packard Hall was one of the first building built on campus. Packard Hall at spelman is used for College Administrative Building as of now. Packard Hall was named after Sophia Packard the co-founded of Spelman. Sophia Packard was a white woman that moved to the south with her friend and had a vision for higher education for African American woman in the south. In 1881 the school name was Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary then in 1884 they changed it to Spelman Seminary in honor of Mrs. Laura Spelman Rockefeller and her parents Harvey Buel and Lucy Henry Spelman, longtime activists in the antislavery movement. Then in 1924 the school changed names agaian to Spelman college to reflect its status as a liberal arts college. Spelman college is an Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). HBCUs were set up after the Civil War to educate blacks in higher education. One reason why people want to go to Spelman is because of their notable alumni like stacy abrams.
