The photo of Graves Hall at Morehouse college, was taken in 1899 or 1900 by W.E.B. Du Bois. Graves Hall was the first building built on the campus. The college was originally named Atlanta Baptist College. The building was built in 1899, consisting of a four-story, red brick building with sixty rooms. As of now, Graves Hall is the oldest building on campus and is still being used today as a dormitory. At the time, W.E.B. Du Bois was publishing The Philadelphia Negro. Because of this commitment, he missed the birth of his first son. Morehouse is a member of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). HBCUs were set up after the Civil War to educate blacks in higher education. There are multiple reasons for Morehouse College’s popularity such as the location in Atlanta, how it is an HBCU school, and the fact that many famous alumni graduated from there. Notable alumni include Martin Luther King Jr. Spike Lee, and Samuel L. Jackson.
