The Price of Education

Abraham Baldwin is most well known for his statewide education program and the creation of the University of Georgia through state funds and land grants. One of Baldwin’s core beliefs was that education is important in developing states to their full potential. Through Baldwins efforts the University of Georgia is the birthplace of higher education due to its revolutionary charter. While Baldwin was a theologian and Christian minister he realized the importance of forbidding religious test in order to create a true public university. It was language like omitting religious tests that helped to develop a framework that could benefit students seeking higher education then and in future generations.

This document is Abraham Baldwin addressing the founding of the University of Georgia a month after the Charter was established. In this address Baldwin begins by describing why education is so imperative to having growing society. He explains that most of the countries hopes to become educated are destroyed by the price of attendance due to there not being a public fund which the University of Georgia's charter will change. The second half of the Address goes into detail about the constitution of the university, which divides powers and dictates how the university will decide which schools will be incorporated into the university.

Zell Miller is most famously known as being a former Governor in the state of Georgia. One of his major accomplishments was implementing the Hope Scholarship through the Georgia university system. Miller’s passion for education began early in his childhood since his father was the dean of Young Harris College and he grew up in that town. When he was older he received a degree from Young Harris and attended Emory University before joining the military. After his time serving Miller took advantage of the educational benefits in the G.I. Bill to attend the University of Georgia and received both a bachelors and masters degree from the University. Later in his life he took a position teaching political science at the University of Georgia. After his teaching career he ran for Governor with one of his major stances being the Hope Scholarship which he would fund through the state lottery system.

This pamphlet describes the Hope Scholarship and was released the first year the scholarship was implemented. It was designed to give potential applicants insight to what the scholarship is and how you become eligible. Zell Miller’s Hope Scholarship has been credited with keeping the states best students in state, raising statewide SAT scores, and improving higher educations in the state of Georgia. The University of Georgia has seen steady improvements in its academic ranking over the 25 years since the scholarship was implemented, which is largely due to over 90% of the universities students benefiting from the scholarship.
